Welfare Building (the Old Eye Hospital)
Bay Street, Barbados

This partial structure you see can be found throughout the West Indies in some shape or form. I am speaking of old historic buildings either in a state of neglect or complete dilapidation.

I am of the belief that the government has more to gain in the total restoration or renovation of its heritage buildings. Like Ecotourism, government can profit from Heritage Tourism. Many of them can be turned into museums or restored and used as office space. The architecture of these Great Houses and Public Buildings are magnificent. Yet more and more of them are being destroyed to make way for modern structures. Now in some areas the architecture in out of sync and causing landscape to look a bit out of place.

The Barbados National Trust cannot be the only entity in the quest to regain and retain some of our history. Government has to step in and make contributions to the cause. Imagine, in 2016, most children may not be able to see the Old Welfare Building, or many of the other architectural structures which are sure to be bulldozed.

The redevelopment of the Inner and Outer Careenage is definitely one of the projects I like. I believe it brings some beauty to the Wharf area. Seating along the waters edge along with the new walk way is absolutely wonderful.

Small and medium fishing boats used to dock in the inner part of the Wharf area pass the swing bridge. But since these improvements are in progress small fishing vessels are not allowed pass the swing bridge. It is rumored that after the project they will be allowed back. And if it so, they may have to pay a small fee to moor along the walkway. I personally do not see the Government permitting them back. Let us wait and see.

For an update on the redevelopment you can view more images at the blog site of gallimaufry.

It was hot and humid. My hat was of some use but I was fuming. I walked along Roebuck Street towards my aunt’s floral shop. As a kid I paid no attention to this building or any other building on Roebuck Street.

But I fell in love with it that day. I began to dissect the structure in to pieces with a series of shots. Then this old man rode into my shot. I was angry for a bit but it subsided. I continued to shoot. It did not matter in the end. Hunger took hold of me and I got a Granola Bar from my camera bag and pushed on, looking for the next shot, the next subject, the next…well you get the idea.
